Shoehi Ohtani’s free agency is still dominating American sports, so much so that Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney made a playful request for the baseball player to learn Welsh.
Ohtani, who played his whole Major League Baseball career with the Los Angeles Angels, is a free agent this winter. He is the most dominant hitter and pitcher in baseball since the legendary Babe Ruth. Fans are watching planes all around North America in an attempt to get a sign as to where Ohtani might land, since his free agency has captured the attention of both American and Canadian sports fans.
Although Toronto and Los Angeles are regarded as the favorites, McElhenney made the joke that Ohtani needs to think about a team that is a little bit off the main path: the formidable Wrexham!
On X, formerly known as Twitter, McElhenney made a joke, “Note to Shohei Ohtani: The January transfer window is just 22 days away and Welsh is a very easy language to learn,” in an attempt to get the Japanese player to think about joining Wrexham.
McElhenney, along with his Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds, has become an expert at maintaining the club’s media attention through their own social media hysteria and the club’s documentary. McElhenney’s lighthearted appeal to Ohtani is just the most recent example of the club and American culture blending together, as Wrexham’s appeal to American supporters only grows.

Currently ranked second in League Two, Wrexham is attempting to maintain their ascent in the English system following their promotion from the fifth level in the previous campaign. The next game is scheduled for December 16 at home against Colchester.
