Sunday’s 4-1 thumping of a jaded-looking Newcastle United saw Tottenham record their first Premier League victory since October. Brazil forward Richarlison also returned to form with two goals.
Ange Postecoglou’s team earned the dubious distinction of being the first Premier League team to lead 1-0 in five straight games without winning any of them in the middle of the week.
However, this time, they never looked back as Destiny Udogie scored the team’s opening goal from skipper Son Heung-Min’s cutback after 26 minutes.
The brilliant Son also fed Richarlison to make it 2-0 before halftime, and he scored again on the hour as Tottenham started to run wild against a Newcastle team that was possibly preoccupied with their crucial Champions League matchup with AC Milan the following week.
After being hauled down by goalie Martin Dubravka in the 85th minute, Son completed an incredible display by scoring from the penalty spot.
Newcastle’s Joelinton scored a late consolation goal, but it was insufficient to undo the victory for Tottenham, who now sit in fifth place with 30 points from 16 games—seven points behind leaders Liverpool in what looks to be an exciting title fight.
After Everton’s 3-0 victory this week, Newcastle’s sixth league loss of the year drops Eddie Howe’s team to seventh place with 26 points.
