After five years with the Salford Red Devils, where he established himself as a cult icon and one of the best wingers in the league, former Hull KR winger Ken Sio has now parted ways with the team.
Among the many outstanding players we have seen at the club recently, he was the league’s leading try scorer in 2021 and was also selected for the Super League Dream Team.
Even though Sio recently inked a new contract, the Red Devils released him on compassionate grounds, which was devastating for both Sio and the team as well as the supporters.
Sio is obviously a huge loss, but the Red Devils have acted swiftly to replace him with Chris Hankinson from Featherstone Rovers.
“It’s quite difficult for me to put into words the situation I’ve been dealt with, but I’ll try my best,” the winger said in an emotional Instagram post.
“I had to announce my resignation from the Salford Red Devils, and trust me, I didn’t make this decision lightly. But I was needed here at home for something bigger than rugby. After moving here with my family at the end of December 2018, I’ve been with the club for five seasons, and it’s been the high point of my career.
“Our brotherhood, the boys. I’m thankful for the experiences, the boys who have come and gone, and the ways in which we have supported one another even when the cards were stacked against us. Thank you to the medical staff and S&C for supporting my self-rehabilitation program, accepting my tenacity in sticking to my return-to-play schedule, and keeping my shattered body together. I will always be grateful to the coaches for recognizing how difficult this was for me because you have helped to keep our team together and weather many storms. Although I’m not sure how I’ll be able to pay you all back, I hope the memories we’ve made together are positive ones. I’ll be back eventually, but for now, thank you.
“I want to express my gratitude to all of my sponsors and fans over the years for their support and concern for my family and myself, especially Vic and the lads.
“I am thankful to be where I need to be, which is at home, even though I have no idea what lies ahead.”
