In Simone Weil’s essay “The Illiad, or The Poem of Force,” she reflects on the seesaw nature of war depicted in Homer’s Trojan War epic. The Golden State Warriors, once seemingly invincible, are now experiencing a stark decline, reminiscent of the recurring theme in basketball dynasties—pride preceding a fall. Five years ago, the Warriors were dominant, winning their third NBA title in four years. However, the narrative has shifted, emphasizing the inevitable decline of successful teams.

Klay Thompson, a defining player of his generation, has faced challenges after tearing his Achilles, impacting his performance on the court. Despite projecting calm, Thompson has expressed frustration and a competitive spirit, grappling with the realization that his elite competitiveness is waning. Draymond Green, known for his imperfections coalescing into a complete player, has exhibited characteristics of a sore loser as the Warriors face setbacks. The team, once dismissing the idea of decline, is now navigating a challenging period, and the spoils of victory appear less enduring than anticipated.

The Warriors’ attempt at a quick rebuild, incorporating young talents alongside their core players, has faced obstacles. Discontent within the team, incidents of violence among players, and underwhelming acquisitions have contributed to the team’s downfall. Despite a brief success in 2022, the dream of a seamless transition to the next era disintegrated. The Warriors, with the league’s highest payroll, find themselves in unfamiliar territory—a great team going out in a manner that echoes the declines of other prominent NBA teams.

The analogy is drawn to other iconic teams like the late Kobe Bryant Lakers, Hakeem Olajuwon’s Rockets, and the Bad Boy Pistons, all facing challenges and disappointments in their later years. Even the revered ’98 Bulls, often cited for going out in a blaze of glory, faced internal issues leading to their dispersal. The Warriors’ story unfolds as another chapter in the recurring narrative of basketball dynasties experiencing a tragic fall after a period of dominance.
