Ferrari’s Formula 1 team principal discloses ongoing discussions with Hamilton about a long-term collaboration.
Fred Vasseur, the team principal of Ferrari, has revealed that discussions between the Maranello-based team and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton have been in progress for ‘twenty years.’
Hamilton’s future with Mercedes became uncertain earlier in 2023 as his contract neared expiration, coupled with the team’s subpar performances giving rise to contemplation. Speculation circulated about the prospect of witnessing one of Formula 1’s most successful drivers joining the most iconic and triumphant team. However, Hamilton put these rumors to rest by extending his contract with the team, where he secured six of his seven world championships, ensuring his presence until at least the conclusion of 2025.
Nevertheless, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner added fuel to the fire by hinting at discussions involving Hamilton’s father and the potential scenario of Hamilton partnering with Max Verstappen. This revelation created a stir among F1 enthusiasts.
Discussions between Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari
Vasseur has now disclosed that discussions did occur with Hamilton, emphasizing that such talks were not unusual for Ferrari.
“A possible arrival at Maranello? We have been talking for twenty years,” the Frenchman said in quotes reported by Corriere Dello Sport.
“If every time we had a chat we had signed a contract it would have cost me a fortune,” he joked.
