Tadej Pogacar’s debut in the Giro d’Italia has been confirmed for 2024, as announced by event organizers on Sunday. The Slovenian, renowned as one of the peloton’s Grand Tour champions with two Tour de France victories and a third-place finish in his sole appearance at the Vuelta a España in 2019, is gearing up to tackle the challenging three-week Giro, commencing on May 4. While Pogacar’s participation adds significant excitement to the race, it comes as a somewhat unexpected development.

Despite expressing his primary goals for the 2024 season—aiming to reclaim the Tour de France title, pursue Olympic gold in Paris, and contend at the UCI World Championships—Pogacar’s decision to include the Giro in his schedule is a notable surprise. The Giro-Tour de France double, last achieved by Marco Pantani in 1998, is generally considered challenging due to the month-long gap between the Giro (May 4-26) and Tour (June 29-July 21). With the added complexity of the road race at Paris 2024 on August 3, maintaining peak performance through late spring and summer poses a significant challenge for Pogacar.
