Australian rugby legend Matt Giteau surprises everyone with an unexpected comeback to rugby at the age of 41.

Matt Giteau, the ex-Australian flyhalf, is set to make a comeback to professional rugby at 41 by joining the American club San Diego Legion for the 2024 Major League Rugby (MLR) season.

After playing for the now-folded MLR club LA Giltinis last year, Giteau, who jokingly declared retirement in February, stating that he had “milked the game and contracts dry,” has decided to come out of retirement. San Diego coach Danny Lee expressed excitement, stating, “We are over the moon to secure Matt’s services for the upcoming season,” in a statement on Wednesday.

Describing Matt Giteau as a world-class player, San Diego coach Danny Lee emphasized that Giteau’s extensive experience, competitive spirit, and determination to succeed would have a positive impact on the entire squad. Giteau, a veteran with 103 test appearances for the Wallabies, played a crucial role in Australia’s journey to the 2015 World Cup final in England.

Over his two-decade career, Giteau achieved remarkable success, winning seven elite competition trophies worldwide. His accolades include titles in various countries, such as Australia, France, Japan, and the United States, where he secured a championship with the short-lived Giltinis in 2021.
