Ranking the Phillies franchise’s top five second basemen in history
The Phillies have produced a number of outstanding second basemen. Which players rank among the team's top five all-time second basemen?
3: Juan Samuel
Hailing from the Dominican Republic, Juan Samuel, signed by the Phillies, graced the team with his presence for parts of seven seasons, spanning from 1983 to 1989. His entry into the big leagues in 1983 was followed by a standout performance in 1984, securing him second place in the Rookie of the Year voting. During this season, Samuel achieved remarkable statistics, including 72 stolen bases, 19 triples, 105 runs scored, and a .272 batting average. Notably, his 72 stolen bases set a single-season franchise record that still stands today.
Samuel’s prowess on the basepaths was evident throughout his career, consistently registering over 33 stolen bases in seasons where he played more than 130 games, except for one season with 23 steals. Over his Phillies tenure, he accumulated 241 stolen bases and scored 523 runs. While not primarily known for power, Samuel maintained a respectable average of 15 home runs per 162 games. He earned All-Star nods in 1984 and 1987 and clinched a Silver Slugger Award in 1987.
Despite Samuel’s individual achievements, the Phillies experienced limited team success during his time in Philadelphia, reaching the World Series in 1983 (a season in which Samuel played only 18 games). Over the six full seasons with Samuel at second base, the Phillies posted a record of 454-516. Samuel continued his association with the Phillies beyond his playing career, serving as a coach on the team’s staff from 2011 to 2017, handling duties as both the third and first base coach.
