Jays sign Kiner-Falefa to a two-year contract

Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a former Ranger, is said to be joining Toronto on a two-year contract.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa and the Toronto Blue Jays have reportedly reached an agreement on a two-year deal. According to reports, the deal is worth $15 million, with an additional $1 million in potential incentives.

IKF, a former Texas Ranger and fourth-round pick in 2013, initially played as a slick-fielding infielder but transitioned to catcher before returning to the infield. After earning a Gold Glove at third base in 2020, IKF assumed the shortstop position in 2021, contributing to a 3.6 bWAR season for the Rangers.

Following the signings of Corey Seager and Marcus Semien, IKF was traded to the Minnesota Twins. Subsequently, he was part of a trade that sent him and Josh Donaldson to the New York Yankees for Gary Sanchez and Gio Urshela.

In the 2022 season with the Yankees, IKF served as the regular shortstop, posting a 3.0 bWAR. In 2023, he transitioned to a utility role, playing mostly in the outfield. Despite a less impactful performance, the Blue Jays are likely considering IKF for an infield position, given the free agency status of Matt Chapman and Whit Merrifield, along with the recent re-signing of Kevin Kiermaier. IKF could potentially fill a role similar to Merrifield, involving second base duties and occasional outfield appearances.
