The devastated family of football star Troy Dargan issues an urgent plea following his tragic death in a horrifying Christmas holiday accident at the young age of 26.
The family of football star Troy Dargan is appealing for assistance in repatriating him, as NRL clubs pay tribute to the 26-year-old following his untimely death in a motorcycle accident during his holiday in the Cook Islands.
Dargan, who played two NRL matches for the Rabbitohs in 2020 and represented the Cook Islands twice in 2019, tragically passed away on Christmas Eve in the South Pacific island nation. The heartbreaking news was initially announced by his management, Aria Sports Group.
In 2023, Dargan was part of the Sea Eagles system and participated in six matches for the Blacktown Workers. Following his passing on Boxing Day, his family initiated a GoFundMe fundraising page to seek assistance in covering the expenses associated with bringing him back to Australia.
“Dearest Family, Friends, and Fans of Troy ‘Tj’ Dargan. On behalf of my beloved sister-in-law Wendy and her husband Troy Dargan, it pains me deeply to convey this,” the post expresses.
“Our family is endeavoring to repatriate his body to Sydney, Australia. Given his sudden passing just before Christmas and the unexpected nature of it all, I am reaching out to seek support in alleviating the financial burden. I kindly ask people to contribute to this cause.
Due to the timing of these events, the associated expenses are far greater than we could have anticipated.
Troy was the most loving, caring son, brother, cousin, nephew, and friend you could have asked for.”
“TJ never gave up, even when faced with challenges. He consistently pushed himself to his limits, which is what made him truly incredible.
There are no words sufficient to convey the profound hurt we, as a family, are experiencing. This is undeniably one of the most devastating things any of us could endure right now.”
The post concludes by mentioning that any surplus funds raised will be directed towards Dargan’s funeral expenses.
NRL clubs paid homage to the late halfback and five-eighth on Boxing Day.
“On behalf of the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles and Blacktown Workers Sea Eagles, our club extends its deepest condolences to Troy’s family,” stated Sea Eagles chief executive Tony Mestrov. “Troy was a highly respected and popular member of the playing squad over the past two seasons.”
“He was a man of great integrity and values, tirelessly working to not only enhance his skills as a player but, just as importantly, to be a kind and genuine individual.
Troy maintained a constant smile, even in the face of injuries that tested his resilience.
He also contributed significantly to the community, forging numerous friendships through his positive energy.
His absence will be deeply felt by everyone at the Sea Eagles.”
Dargan had recently joined the Raiders in the preseason and swiftly left a positive impression on the entire playing group.
“This is an incredibly somber period for Troy’s family and friends, and we are committed to respecting their privacy while extending our support to help them navigate through this challenging time,” remarked Raiders chief executive Don Furner.
“Troy, at just 26 years old, had a promising NRL career ahead of him with our club, and we were eagerly anticipating his contributions. The news is profoundly disheartening for Troy’s current teammates, and we will be extending our support to anyone who may need it during this difficult time.”
In South Sydney’s statement, they expressed, ‘The Rabbitohs and the entire rugby league community are mourning the passing of former player Troy Dargan,’ along with a link to the GoFundMe page.
The Brisbane Broncos conveyed their deep sorrow at the news of Dargan’s passing, stating, ‘Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones. Always part of the Broncos family,’ on social media.
