Mercedes is in an uncommon situation, as they find themselves for the first time in years having to make up ground.

Having asserted their dominance in Formula 1 from 2014 to 2021, the Mercedes team is now relinquishing their supremacy to Red Bull. As Red Bull continues to outperform all rivals, the German manufacturer is faced with the unfamiliar challenge of playing catch-up, a situation they haven’t encountered in quite some time.

In their pursuit of narrowing the gap, Mercedes experimented with avant-garde designs such as the “zero sidepod” W13 but met with limited success. In 2023, they opted for a strategic shift back to a more conventional design, resembling that of Red Bull, in an endeavor to regain competitive ground.
