Raducanu, who believes she has evolved as a player during her hiatus, demonstrated her talent in the match. The encounter held significance as it marked Raducanu’s return to the ASB Classic, where she suffered an injury last year. Drawn to face her friend Ruse, a qualifier, Raducanu aimed to initiate the new season with a win.
In the first set, the 2021 US Open champion impressed observers, securing a 6-3 victory. However, the second set presented challenges, with Raducanu facing an early 0-3 deficit. Despite making a comeback, Ruse won the set 6-4.
The third set showcased Raducanu’s resilience as she broke her opponent’s serve twice, establishing a 5-2 lead. Although facing challenges, including missed match points, Raducanu ultimately prevailed, winning the match 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 and marking a successful start to her 2024 season.
