Teenager admits guilt in ‘gruesome GBH assault’ on a boy outside a rugby club.
Two teenagers, identified as 18-year-old Jack Challoner from Merthyr Road, Rhymney Bridge, Llechryd, Caerphilly, and an unnamed 17-year-old boy, have pleaded guilty to committing a severe assault causing grievous bodily harm on a 17-year-old boy outside a rugby club. The incident, described as a “horrific assault,” occurred near the Rhymney rugby club on June 4, 2022, where a group of teenagers had gathered. The victim sustained a fractured cheekbone as a result of the attack.
Prosecutor Miquelle Groves informed Newport Magistrates’ Court that the assault was unprovoked, involving an initial altercation followed by a pursuit where the victim was kicked, punched, and repeatedly stamped on, leading to his injuries.
Representatives Josie Flicker for Challoner and Pat Matthews for the underage boy stated that their clients were admitting guilt on the basis that Challoner had punched the victim once, and the boy had kicked the complainant on a single occasion.
Challoner’s case has been forwarded to the crown court for sentencing scheduled on January 18, while the juvenile defendant will face proceedings at Newport Youth Court on January 9. Both defendants have been granted unconditional bail.
