New England Patriots

Jerod Mayo could play a crucial role in influencing the choice of this free agent from the Patriots.

Mack Wilson expresses his desire to return for a third season with the Patriots, but he emphasizes that his decision is contingent on the return of his position coach, Jerod Mayo. Wilson, one of over 15 New England players entering free agency, informed Sophie Weller of A to Z Sports that Mayo’s presence on the coaching staff will play a significant role in his choice to re-sign.

“Yeah, I would say yeah,” the linebacker stated to Weller, adding, “Mayo’s my guy.” Despite his interest in returning, Wilson acknowledged the importance of Mayo’s involvement. The 25-year-old unexpectedly stood out in the latter part of the season, showcasing his athleticism and disruptive skills in a new role as an edge rusher, recording a sack in three of the Patriots’ last four games.

Wilson has previously praised Mayo, expressing admiration for the former Patriots linebacker and current linebacker coach. During training camp, he noted Mayo’s decision to forgo other opportunities and stay with the Patriots, stating that it holds significant value for the organization, the linebackers, the defense as a whole, and, most importantly, the team. Wilson emphasized the importance of having someone like Mayo around consistently, expressing these sentiments in July.

Robert Kraft persuaded Jerod Mayo to decline head-coaching interviews during the previous offseason and instead renew his contract with the Patriots. Shortly after, Kraft expressed his belief that Mayo had the potential to become a future head coach and expressed his hope that Mayo would eventually assume that role for the New England team.

Jerod Mayo is currently considered a top contender to take over from Bill Belichick in the event of a separation between Belichick and the Patriots after the season. However, recent reports have raised questions about the 37-year-old’s preparedness for such a role. If the team decides to keep Belichick or opts for a different coach, Mayo would probably have opportunities outside New England if he decided to explore them.

Since joining Belichick’s staff in 2019, Mayo has expressed on several occasions his desire to become an NFL head coach, believing he is prepared for such a role. As of Thursday, it remained uncertain how the Patriots intended to move forward with Belichick. New England will conclude its season this Sunday against the New York Jets at Gillette Stadium.
