Tom Holmes, a player for the Bradford Bulls, has been diagnosed with an uncommon type of cancer.

At 27 years old, Tom Holmes, who has previously played for clubs such as the Castleford Tigers, Featherstone Rovers, and Huddersfield Giants, experienced a deterioration in his health towards the end of last year. In a statement, he mentioned, “I noticed a swift decline in my well-being right as the season concluded.”

“Following numerous appointments, hospital visits, biopsies, and scans, the specialists advised me to brace myself for the worst. They informed me that I am dealing with an exceptionally rare form of cancer (SPTCL), for which the recommended treatment is chemotherapy. This cancer affects less than one percent of the population, creating a significant amount of uncertainty even for the medical professionals themselves.”

“I still have additional testing ahead, and we are in the process of developing a treatment plan. While I’m striving to maintain hope, the specialists are exploring all possible avenues in the slim chance that there might be a less severe explanation. Unfortunately, at the moment, it seems less probable that there’s an alternative, and chemotherapy may need to commence soon.”

Holmes has conveyed his appreciation to the Bulls for their unwavering support. “Bradford has been incredibly supportive throughout this entire journey,” he remarked.

“Due to the uncertainty about my health, I haven’t been able to participate in any pre-season activities. Nevertheless, the club has been exceptionally supportive during this challenging period, and I am committed to backing the team and contributing in any way possible.”

The club has been incredibly supportive throughout this challenging period, doing everything possible to assist me. I remain committed to supporting the team and contributing in any capacity I can.”

“These past few months have been incredibly challenging, not only for me but also for my family and those closest to me who have been aware of the situation. My partner and my kids have been my pillars of strength. I can’t express enough gratitude for their unwavering support every single day, regardless of the challenges we face.”

Bradford head coach Eamon O’Carroll also commented, stating, “Tom is a vital part of this team and will remain an integral part throughout this season.”

“Since day one as one of our senior players, he has provided tremendous support for me, and I genuinely enjoy working with him. I am exceptionally proud of how he has navigated through this challenging situation, and his attitude and courage serve as inspiration. The entire team, staff, and club stand firmly by his side every step of the way. I am confident that the rugby league community will also extend their support.”
