The Golden State Warriors have expressed interest in acquiring Pascal Siakam from the Toronto Raptors. However, sources reveal that the Warriors are reluctant to part ways with Jonathan Kuminga, as he is viewed as a potential star who can contribute to both the team’s current success and its future. Kuminga’s unique position on the roster aligns with the Warriors’ strategic approach of blending young talent with their established championship core, as per NBA insider Michael Grange of Sportsnet.
Despite trade discussions, the Warriors are wary of trading Kuminga due to his significant role in supporting Steph Curry presently and potentially leading the team in a successful post-Curry future. Adding to the complexity, Kuminga shares a close relationship with Warriors owner Joe Lacob, known for being hesitant to part with young talent integral to the team’s long-term strategy.
Selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga has showcased his skills, averaging 12.8 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists this season. Siakam, a two-time All-Star and potential trade target, is averaging 22.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 5.0 assists this season. However, Kuminga’s reported loss of faith in Warriors head coach Steve Kerr adds another layer of complexity to the situation. While Kuminga earns $6 million this season, Siakam, an unrestricted free agent in the summer, has a salary of $37.9 million.
It’s worth noting that any team trading for Siakam this season can only offer him a two-year extension.
