Former Wales and British and Irish Lions fullback JPR Williams has passed away at the age of 74, according to an announcement from Premier Division club Bridgend Ravens on Monday. Williams, a key figure in the golden era of Welsh rugby during the 1970s, not only captained his country but also played a significant role at Bridgend, serving as the club president in recent times.
“Bridgend Ravens are devastated to announce the passing of JPR Williams,” stated the club on the social media platform X. “One of Bridgend’s most decorated players and an icon of world rugby, JPR served the club most recently as Club President.”
Williams earned 55 caps for Wales and played for the British & Irish Lions on eight occasions, contributing to their successful tours to New Zealand in 1971 and South Africa in 1974.
Williams passed away on Monday after a brief illness, as stated by his family in a report by the BBC. The family issued a statement saying, “JPR died peacefully today at the University Hospital of Wales, surrounded by his loving wife and four children, after a short illness, bravely battling bacterial meningitis.”
