Anaheim Ducks Claim Gustav Lindstrom off Waivers from Montreal Canadiens

Chris Johnston from TSN reports that the Anaheim Ducks have secured defenseman Gustav Lindstrom off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens. Lindstrom was initially acquired by the Canadiens from the Detroit Red Wings, accompanied by a 2025 fourth-round pick, in exchange for defenseman Jeff Petry. This trade took place towards the end of the previous summer, following Petry’s move to Montreal from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 25-year-old Lindstrom, drafted 38th overall by Detroit in the 2017 NHL entry draft, showcased his NHL potential during the 2019-2020 season, contributing one assist in a 16-game stint. In the subsequent pandemic-shortened season, Lindstrom played 13 NHL games, accumulating three points while grappling with turnovers and defensive lapses.

During his first full NHL season in 2021-22, Lindstrom appeared in 63 games, averaging over 16 minutes of ice time per game. While displaying prowess as a shot blocker and a physical presence on the blue line, his struggles with puck management became evident.

In the current season with Montreal, Lindstrom has featured in 13 games, achieving a career-high of three goals and an assist. Despite his goal-scoring contributions, Lindstrom has not played for Montreal since December 9th, and it was anticipated that he would be sent to the Laval Rocket of the AHL if he cleared waivers.

With the successful waiver claim, the Ducks gain the opportunity to evaluate a talented yet imperfect young defenseman without any financial commitment.
