“Guardians Continue Pitching Development Success: Signs Carter Spivey, Former East Carolina University Standout”

Cleveland has reportedly inked a deal with Carter Spivey, the recipient of the 2022 American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year award.

The Cleveland Guardians

In recent years, the Cleveland Guardians have demonstrated a knack for nurturing pitchers into established figures in Major League Baseball.

The roster includes notable names such as Shane Bieber, the recipient of the 2020 AL Cy Young Award, Tanner Bibee, the runner-up for the 2023 AL Rookie of the Year, along with Triston McKenzie, Logan Allen, and Gavin Williams.

Reports now indicate that Cleveland has secured another promising pitcher for its organization. As per the East Carolina University Baseball team, the Guardians have officially signed right-handed pitcher Carter Spivey to a contract. The specific terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

During his five-season tenure at East Carolina, the 24-year-old Spivey, who was teammates with Gavin Williams for three seasons, made a significant impact. His collegiate career comprised 83 appearances, including 15 starts, resulting in a record of 17-4 with a 4.71 ERA, one complete game, one shutout, six saves, 55 walks, 168 strikeouts, and a .271 opposing batting average. Arguably, his standout season occurred in 2022, earning him recognition as the American Athletic Conference (AAC) Pitcher of the Year and a Third Team Collegiate Baseball All-American. In that year, he made 35 appearances (including two starts), boasting a perfect 8-0 record with a 2.83 ERA, five saves, 19 walks, and 76 strikeouts. Subsequently, Spivey was honored as the 2023 AAC Preseason Pitcher of the Year by various publications and unanimously by the conference coaches. He also received Preseason Second Team All-American accolades from both Collegiate Baseball and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

In the 2023 season, Spivey continued to make his mark, securing a spot on the All-AAC Second Team after making 24 appearances, including 10 starts. His performance included a 7-3 record with a 4.68 ERA, one complete game, one shutout, one save, 22 walks, and 68 strikeouts. Following his final college season, Spivey transitioned to the Frontier League, making eight starts with the Florence Y’alls last year. He concluded the season with a 2-1 record, a 3.06 ERA, 41 strikeouts, and a 1.19 WHIP.
