How did the Red Sox pass up advantageous contract and link?

It was shocking to learn that Marcus Stroman had signed with the New York Yankees on Thursday night after a tense four years with the team.

The two parties’ disagreement started in 2019 when Brian Cashman, the general manager of New York, stated he didn’t believe Stroman would be “a difference maker” on his postseason team. That was taken personally by Stroman.

The two parties’ disagreement started in 2019 when Brian Cashman, the general manager of New York, stated he didn’t believe Stroman would be “a difference maker” on his postseason team. That was taken personally by Stroman.

At the time, the right-hander expressed his dislike for the Yankees organization on Twitter, despite being his childhood favorite team. Fans of the Yankees and he haven’t been friends since.

New York completed a contract with Stroman before the Red Sox could, despite the animosity between the two teams. Boston has apparently been eyeing Stroman to add depth to its current, mediocre starting rotation.

The Sox front office even has a link to Stroman. New Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow arrived in Boston from the North Side of Chicago this offseason. He played with the Cubs for two years with Stroman.

The Red Sox ought to have moved more quickly to sign the 32-year-old pitcher after witnessing the amount the Yankees paid for him.

But the front staff needs to make another move now that Boston has lost yet another pitching target. There are rumors that the Sox are still interested in Jordan Montgomery, the 2023 World Series champion, albeit he would cost a lot more. Fans no longer find any importance in Boston’s claims to be “in on” pitchers since the team hasn’t delivered on any of them this offseason.

When you consider that the Sox’s batting order will face a rejuvenated Stroman several times this season—a man who is undoubtedly hungry to disprove Yankee fans who have painted a bullseye on his back—the situation becomes much worse for the team. Fans of the Sox should only hope that he is more of a diversion.
