Damien Cook’s successor decides on a contract decision.
Described as the successor to Damien Cook and the anticipated future hooker for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Peter Mamouzelos has apparently made a decision regarding his contract. Despite being initially off-contract at the season’s end and free to engage with other teams, the local South Sydney talent and ten-time Greek international is poised to extend his tenure with the Rabbitohs, even in the current scenario where opportunities are limited with Damien Cook as the primary hooker.
According to Michael Chammas of The Sydney Morning Herald, Mamouzelos has reportedly committed to a new three-year contract, ensuring his stay with the Rabbitohs until the conclusion of 2027. Although he has only participated in seven NRL games since his debut in 2021 (including two in 2023), Mamouzelos has showcased his skills in the NSW Cup, earning the title of NSW Cup Hooker of the Year in the previous season. This recognition is expected to translate into more playing chances for him in the upcoming season.
By choosing to stay with the team in the distinctive red and green colors, Mamouzelos’ reported decision means that the club will face the challenge of negotiating contracts with 12 players at the end of the forthcoming season.
It appears that Thomas Fletcher, Jye Gray, Ben Lovett, Leon Te Hau, and Dion Teaupa are poised to re-sign with the club, being considered integral parts of its future. On the other hand, there are uncertainties surrounding the futures of Thomas Burgess, who is likely to retire and join his brother Sam in the Super League, as well as Michael Chee-Kam, Taane Milne, and Izaac Thompson, who might depart at the end of the season due to their age. The Rabbitohs seem inclined to make room for emerging talent from their NSW Cup, Jersey Flegg, and SG Ball teams, emphasizing the need for a transition in the roster.
In this context, Dean Hawkins, Shaquai Mitchell, and Isaiah Tass find themselves in a position without a contract beyond 2024. The club faces decisions on their futures as part of the ongoing team development and strategic planning for the seasons ahead.
