Ron Washington discusses Alex Anthopoulos and his departure from the Braves.

After a considerable wait, Ron Washington, the former third base coach for the Braves, has been granted another chance at a managerial role, this time with the Los Angeles Angels. Despite being overlooked multiple times in recent years, Washington’s return to a managerial position is well-deserved. While his presence will be missed in Braves Country, the opportunity for him to lead again is rightfully earned.

Despite Ron Washington’s eagerness to return as a manager, the decision to depart from Atlanta was a challenging one. A significant factor in this difficulty was the recent eight-year extension received by Alex Anthopoulos from the Braves, ensuring his continuity with the organization until at least the 2031 season.

Addressing Anthopoulos’ extension during an interview on Foul Territory, Washington spoke highly of him, stating, “When it happened, I certainly called him because Alex (Anthopoulos) is a great man.” Washington emphasized Anthopoulos’ commitment to looking out for his team members, a commitment Washington experienced firsthand during his time with the Braves. Despite receiving job offers elsewhere, Washington disclosed that he had conveyed to Anthopoulos upon joining that he would stay in Atlanta only if presented with a managerial opportunity.

A less recognized but crucial element of Alex Anthopoulos’ time as the Braves’ general manager is his skill in connecting with everyone within the organization. Every player and coach in Atlanta holds respect for Anthopoulos and his managerial approach. This not only proves valuable in negotiations with long-time members but also significantly influences dealings with free agents. .

Nonetheless, there comes a point when everyone must embrace change, and after seven seasons with the Braves, Ron Washington saw this as the opportune moment to move on.

“The opportunity for me to manage happened at the right time,” Washington remarked. “It was time for me to depart. Myself, along with EY (Eric Young Sr.) and the rest of the coaching staff, were consistently guiding and mentoring them every day they entered the ballpark. Now, with two influential figures gone, they will need to rely on the remaining coaches and the values, wisdom, and knowledge we imparted. Leaving Atlanta was tough, but I have the chance to contribute to something special with the Los Angeles Angels.”

Ron Washington is a revered figure in Atlanta, playing a pivotal role in the organization’s remarkable success, including six consecutive division titles and a World Series victory in 2021. Leading the turnaround for the Angels is a formidable challenge, but if anyone is up for the task, it’s Wash. Braves Country will undoubtedly be cheering for his success from a distance.
