Rabbitohs Secure Emerging Star with a Long-Term Contract Extension
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have successfully secured the commitment of the promising young talent, Peter Mamouzelos, who is poised to become the starting dummy half in the future.
Mamouzelos, who has already represented Greece at the international level, has patiently awaited his opportunities at the Burrow, participating in just seven NRL games since his debut in 2021. Currently serving as the backup to Damien Cook, he is expected to continue in this role for the next two years, coinciding with the conclusion of Cook’s existing contract, before assuming the primary role as the number nine at Redfern.
While Mamouzelos waits for his starting role, Coach Jason Demetriou may explore opportunities for him to contribute off the bench, ensuring he continues to gain valuable first-grade experience in the interim.
The 23-year-old has inked a three-year extension, prolonging his association with the Rabbitohs until the culmination of the 2027 season. Notably, Mamouzelos had the option to negotiate with other clubs since November 1 of the previous year, a full 12 months prior to the expiration of his existing contract.
Despite the potential opportunity to secure a starting role sooner with another team, Mamouzelos expressed an unwavering commitment to remaining at Redfern.
“I’m really excited to be extending my time with this club,” Mamouzelos stated in a club release. “I told my manager I didn’t want to go anywhere else. I’ve grown up here in the South Sydney area; it’s always been my team, and I love this club. When I spoke to him and he said we’re staying here, I was ecstatic. We have the best members and fans in the competition, and it’s an honour to play for them each week. My family has made so many sacrifices for me to get to where I am, and I can’t thank them enough.”
Mark Ellison, South Sydney’s head of football, highlighted Mamouzelos’s increasing role in the team’s future plans, stating, “Pete is a South Sydney junior that has worked hard to get into the position; he finds himself with the opportunity to play more first grade in the coming seasons. He is relishing the opportunity to work with one of the best hookers in our game in Damien Cook, as well as other seasoned players such as Siliva Havili, and he is the sort of player that works hard on his game and learns about the dummy half role from his team mates and his coaches.
We’ve seen him improve consistently over the past few years as he has worked his way up through the grades, and he is set to play a bigger role in first grade in the coming seasons. We’re really happy to know that Pete sees his future here at the Rabbitohs, and we’re all looking forward to seeing the further progression in his game over the next four years and beyond.”
