Tragic Incident Unfolds: Fatal Crash at Florida Turnpike’s Southbound Off-Ramp Leading to Northwest 199th Street
Thursday night, an automobile accident close to Hard Rock Stadium claimed the life of a man when the car he was driving collided with Miami's Formula 1 track.
The driver was killed, according to the Florida Highway Patrol, when he was ejected from a grey Dodge coupe around 1:45 p.m. local time on the Florida Turnpike’s southbound off-ramp leading to Northwest 199th Street.
His vehicle crashed into a bridge wall before appearing to somersault over the barrier, off the flyover, and onto the Formula One track below, where it crashed into many palm trees.
The deceased was thrown from the vehicle while it was on the bridge, and it later overturned and came to rest at the turn 16 exit of the racetrack. The Fire Rescue team declared him dead at the scene.
Being one of the furthest locations from Hard Rock Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins NFL club, this portion of the circuit, constructed for the inaugural Miami GP in 2022, has debris fencing and permanent barriers.
The Turnpike expressway, which stretches from Miami to Daytona and Orlando in the north, is available to travel during the Formula One weekend, but all track activity occurs behind closed off ramps.
Now, investigators are trying to figure out why the crash happened.
