COCO GAUFF, DURING AN AUSTRALIAN OPEN, PAYS TRIBUTE TO JOURNALIST MIKE DICKSON, AFTER SUDDEN PASSING

Following the death of tennis writer Mike Dickson during the Australian Open in 2024, Coco Gauff sent her condolences to his family. Tragically, Dickson, a tennis journalist for nearly thirty years, died in Melbourne while covering the opening Grand Slam of the year.

The American tennis star began her press conference after her third-round triumph by praising Dickson. Gauff was given a chance by the moderator to express her opinions: Yes, I wanted to offer my sympathies to Mike Dickson and his family at the beginning of this news conference. She began, “I know it was a big loss in the press room for you guys.

Gauff joined Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic among other tennis players who have previously sent their sympathies to the Dickson family via social media. “Life is precious,” she said, mentioning her chats with the journalist and praising his important contribution to tennis. What you guys and his family are going through is beyond what I could ever understand.

I’ve spoken with him a few times in the past. I am aware that he has been pushing tennis for a very long period. You folks and the athletes are devastated by this, said Coco Gauff. “I pray his family has a nice final resting place. Yes, I appreciate it,” she said, capping the inquiries over her match.

It was really kind of @CocoGauff to begin her press conference at #AusOpen today with some meaningful remarks regarding Mike Dickson’s passing.

Without a doubt, Gauff has performed admirably in the first Grand Slam of the season. With her outstanding achievements in the first week of the competition, the world No. 4 and defending Grand Slam winner has established herself as one of the strongest candidates for the crown.

She defeated her compatriot Caroline Doleheide (7-6, 6-2) in the opening round after defeating Anna Schmiedlova (6-3, 6-0). She recently defeated 22-year-old American player Alycia Parks at the Margaret Court Arena. Parks had earlier defeated Leylah Fernandez in the previous round.

Gauff will play world no. 69 Magdalena Frech in the round of 16. The Polish tennis player has advanced against Daría Gavrilova, Anastasia Zakharova, and Caroline Garcia (16th seed), earning her a position in a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time in her career. She is also about to break into the top 50, which would be her highest rating to date.

I’m quite sad to hear this information. May he rest in peace and accept my sincere condolences ❤️
