The Wests Tigers have successfully recruited a prominent forward…
Amelia Huakau (formerly Mafi) has officially joined the Wests Tigers NRLW team, signing a two-year contract with the club. The accomplished forward, who previously played for the Parramatta Eels NRLW, is set for a new chapter with the Tigers. Huakau showcased her skills in all nine games for the Eels last season and has recently tied the knot.
Commencing her NRLW journey in 2020, Huakau’s rugby league roots trace back to South Auckland before her move to Sydney in 2018. Initially representing the Wentworthville Magpies in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership, she later secured a spot with the Eels.
As a Tongan international, Huakau made her representative debut in 2022 and participated in the 2023 Pacific Championships, facing off against Australia and New Zealand. Expressing her excitement, she commented on the incredible atmosphere at the Wests Tigers Zurich Centre after a guided tour, according to the club’s website.
“I’m truly impressed with the high level of professionalism and advanced facilities here, surpassing my experiences with other clubs.
“Having previously played alongside Sarah [Togatuki] and Bo [Vette-Welsh] during my time at the Roosters, it’s been wonderful to reunite with familiar faces, and the entire team has been incredibly welcoming.
“I admire the proactive style of attack that last year’s team demonstrated, and I’m eager to elevate my game further under the guidance of Brett [Kimmorley], especially alongside some of the top forwards in women’s rugby league,” she enthusiastically remarked.
Brett Kimmorley, the head coach of the NRLW side, expressed his satisfaction upon learning of Amelia’s signing with the club, foreseeing a significant contribution to the Tigers’ forward pack.
“Amelia showcased her skills admirably during a challenging campaign with her former club last season,” stated Kimmorley. “I believe she has the potential for continuous improvement, and I am eagerly anticipating the development of her game in the seasons ahead with us. It’s a pleasure to welcome Amelia and her family to Wests Tigers.”
