The Warriors’ respectful gesture toward lonald Volkman following his departure from the Dragons.
The Warriors have extended a generous offer to their former player, Ronald Volkman, agreeing to cover the expenses for his shoulder surgery and flying him to New Zealand. This comes as a welcome relief for Volkman, who has faced a challenging period, finding himself without a club for the 2024 season and his career hanging in the balance.
Volkman’s trajectory took an unexpected turn when he left the Warriors at the conclusion of the previous season to join the Dragons on a 12-month deal for 2024. However, this contract with the Red V was terminated after a shoulder injury suffered by the young halfback came to light. Despite the Dragons announcing the deal and Volkman training with the squad, a routine medical examination revealed the need for season-ending shoulder surgery.
Reports suggest that Volkman sustained a contact injury in December during his time with the Warriors, and subsequent scans conducted by the Dragons revealed displaced screws from a prior operation. Seeking a third opinion from an independent doctor confirmed the necessity of surgery, estimated to cost up to $50,000.
Given Volkman’s release from his Warriors contract and the fact that his Dragons deal was never officially registered with the NRL, he lacks the necessary health insurance, and neither team is obligated to cover the ensuing medical expenses. Nevertheless, as reported by The Daily Telegraph, the Warriors have stepped in to provide assistance in this challenging situation.
Clint Newton, the chief executive of the Rugby League Players Association, addressed the matter on radio before the news of the Warriors’ compassionate gesture became public.
