Transfer DB Details Reasons for Rejecting Alabama Football as Transfer Option

He watched the confetti in maize and blue fall as Michigan celebrated their victory in the College Football Playoff National Championship at the end of 2023.

With Jim Harbaugh leaving for another NFL opportunity, several players entering the NFL Draft, and others exploring the NCAA transfer portal, Keon Sabb had the option to stay with the Wolverines. However, a Southeastern Conference school felt more like home to the New Jersey native.

Last season, Sabb recorded 28 tackles, five pass breakups, two interceptions, and a pick-six. He decided to join the Crimson Tide for spring football, eager to learn from veterans like Malachi Moore and DeVonta Smith. Sabb now forms half of a formidable safety duo in college football.

The 6-foot-1, 206-pound defensive back brings valuable championship experience and leadership to Alabama’s secondary.

What should particularly excite Alabama fans is Sabb’s rationale for choosing the Tide in the transfer portal. After Tuesday’s practice, Sabb shared his compelling reason with the media.

“It was how hard they [Alabama] fought,” Sabb said. “That was our toughest game last year for sure, and they pushed us to the limit. I could definitely see how passionate those guys were about playing football.”

Alabama proved to be Michigan’s toughest opponent in the Rose Bowl. The game was tight throughout, but mental errors allowed the Wolverines to secure a 27-20 overtime victory. While Sabb enjoyed the victory over the Tide, his focus has shifted to aiding Alabama in their quest for a national title. Colin Hitschler, Alabama’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, appreciates what Sabb brings to the team.

“Any time you have the confidence from being a starter and impact player on a national championship team, you know you’re going to carry yourself well,” Hitschler remarked about Sabb.

“He came in here and carried himself well in the spring. What stands out about Keon is his hard work, and he is highly respected by the team. Once players start to love and respect you, you become more vocal. Everyone listens to him because he consistently does the right things.”

Alabama fans are eager to see Sabb lead the secondary to a standout season.
