Rabbitohs player shares insights into the future of the South Sydney team.
South Sydney veteran Tom Burgess has expressed his desire to extend his career with the Rabbitohs. However, he is also contemplating a potential return to England if a new contract with South Sydney is not on the horizon. Burgess, one of 11 Rabbitohs players without a contract beyond the 2024 season, is embarking on his 12th season with the team, having played 225 games for the club.
Last season, the Premiership player faced challenges, participating in only 16 games, marking his lowest involvement since his debut season in 2013. Injury and suspension issues contributed to a challenging year for the Englishman. Despite his strong attachment to the Rabbitohs, Burgess acknowledges the business aspect of the sport and is open to exploring other opportunities if a new deal with South Sydney does not materialize.
While Burgess’s preference is to remain in Australia due to his young family, he is open to the possibility of playing in the Super League in England or France. His brother, Sam Burgess, who is coaching Warrington, adds a familial aspect to the potential move, but Tom emphasizes that nothing is certain.
Sam Burgess has mentioned the possibility of luring his brother back to England to join the Wolves in the future. He views Tom as a valuable addition to the Cheshire club, though he acknowledges that Tom still has much to offer in the NRL. Tom Burgess is receptive to the idea of playing in the Super League, even if he continues in the NRL next year. Despite the uncertainties, he believes he still has much to contribute to the game.
