Scott Boras Represents Four Players Seeking Major Contracts as January Nears End
Among the teams hovering around four of Scott Boras's most prominent clients are the Chicago Cubs, among them is Cody Bellinger.
Baseball’s leading agent, Scott Boras, still represents four players seeking substantial contracts as January draws to a close.
Pitchers Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery, along with third baseman Matt Chapman and outfielder Cody Bellinger, remain in the market without being deterred by escalating prices. Conversely, ESPN’s Jeff Passan recently highlighted the sluggish pace of the free-agent market compared to 2018, when Shohei Ohtani’s high-profile deal dominated headlines, coinciding with Boras representing four top-tier clients. This time around, Ohtani secured a staggering $700 million contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers nearly a month ago.
Despite this, Passan suggests the market remains robust, pointing to the considerable sums already spent. ESPN’s projections estimate the cumulative salaries for remaining players could reach around $1 billion.
This news is particularly encouraging for Bellinger and hopeful Chicago Cubs fans anticipating his potential return. Interest from seven teams, including the Cubs, has been noted in Boras’ clientele.
However, optimism may be premature. MLB executives informed Passan that it’s “unlikely” the quartet will finalize deals before January concludes, raising the possibility of them remaining unsigned as Spring Training commences.
Players like Dansby Swanson have voiced support for Bellinger’s return during recent events like Cubs Con, underscoring his popularity among teammates and fans alike.
While Bellinger may have suitors beyond the Cubs, Passan suggests the team has several options. They could pursue Snell or Montgomery for pitching depth, secure Chapman for third base stability, or opt to re-sign Bellinger.
Nevertheless, the Cubs’ ability to meet Boras’ demands remains uncertain, as his asking prices are unlikely to wane.
