Done Deal; J.P. Martinez to the Braves

ATLANTA — In exchange for right-hander Tyler Owens on Friday, the Atlanta Braves acquired J.P. Martínez from the Texas Rangers, adding depth to their outfield.

Last season, the 27-year-old Martínez debuted in major league baseball with the Rangers, who won the World Series. With one home run and four RBIs, the left-handed hitter had a.225 batting average in 17 games and 44 plate appearances.

The product of Cuba played in three leagues over the majority of 2023, batting.297 with 14 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 41 stolen bases. He adds a much-needed position player to the Braves’ 40-man roster, and in spring training, he should be a contender for a bench role.

After spending four seasons in Atlanta’s minor league system, the 23-year-old Owens advanced to Double-A Mississippi in the previous campaign. He has made 77 professional appearances and has a 5.15 record.
