Breaking: The Blue Jays have acquired another unclaimed free agent

Domingo Germán, a former pitcher for the New York Yankees, anticipates taking the mound once more in 2024.

According to Mark W.  Sanchez of the New York Post, the right-hander is in contract talks with six organizations, including the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, and Baltimore Orioles. Steve Cohen’s squad is regarded as “the least favorites,” Sanchez continued.

According to Sanchez, two teams have made bids to Germán, however, no trade is imminent.

Before becoming a free agent in November, Germán had been a member of the Yankees for his entire seven-year career, having turned down an outright demotion to the minor levels.

The 31-year-old was only able to play in 20 games (19 starts) in the 2023 season due to his restricted list placement by the Yankees in August and his voluntary admission into an inpatient alcohol consumption treatment facility after a reported altercation in the team clubhouse.

Before a game against the Tampa Bay Rays, Germán flipped over a couch, damaged a television, and got into arguments with teammates and manager Aaron Boone, according to Lindsey Adler of The Wall Street Journal at the time.

The Yankees put him in the team’s nap room, under security observation, after concluding he was drunk, while the rest of the roster got ready to play the Rays.

Germán, according to Sanchez, “has completed the required steps of an inpatient treatment program” as well as “is still voluntarily checking in with professionals periodically to ensure he is on the right path.”

Source: “He’s working hard and doing well,” said to Sanchez. “He has shifted away from several of his previous sources of distraction. He is doing well.”

The incident that happened in the clubhouse is the second known off-field problem that Germán had when he was a Yankee.

He was previously suspended 81 games for breaching MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and the 2019 season. The allegations stemmed from him reportedly acting violently toward his then-girlfriend, who is currently his wife, while under the influence of alcohol.

The 2023 season for Germán was inconsistent before he was added to the restricted list.

After failing a sticky drug test during a start in May, the Dominican was dismissed and given a 10-game suspension. He pitched a perfect game in an Oakland Athletics victory 11-0, about a month later.

With a 4.56 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, and 114 strikeouts in 108.2 innings, Germán finished 5-7 in 2023. After 112 games (89 starts), he has a lifetime 4.41 ERA.
