BOSTON, MA — Former big league player and Boston Red Sox manage
, who led the team from 1997-2001, has died, the Red Sox announced Monday.
Williams died in Florida following a brief illness, the team claimed, according to several accounts.
He is survived by his wife Peggy, four children, and eight grandchildren.
“The Red Sox lost a true staple and leader in Jimmy Williams,” the organization said in a statement posted on X, the old name of Twitter, on Monday afternoon. “We send our love to the Willams family.”
According to his biography at the Society for American Baseball Research, Williams had a brief big-league playing career after signing his first professional contract in 1964 as an infielder with the Red Sox.
