Josh Hader discloses the reasons behind his decision to join the Astros.

Whenever doubts arise concerning the Houston Astros, the franchise consistently addresses them with significant moves. Facing uncertainties with several relievers entering MLB free agency and catcher Martin Maldonado joining the Chicago White Sox, there was some concern.

However, the signing of Josh Hader on Jan. 19, agreeing to a five-year, $95 million contract, has significantly eased any apprehension.

This deal places him among the highest-paid relief pitchers in baseball history, a fact that might worry those cautious about substantial investments in relievers, especially after Edwin Diaz suffered a season-ending injury shortly after his historic deal with the New York Mets in November 2022. Nevertheless, Hader’s addition strengthens Houston’s chances of contending for another championship.

The sentiment is reciprocated by Hader himself. In explaining his free agency decision to MLB Network, the five-time All-Star emphasized the primary motivation: winning a World Series.

He pointed out that the Houston Astros have achieved this feat, and being part of a team that is visibly gelling well on the field is something he and his team wanted to be a part of.
