Harry DeMattia’s Impressive Start with Collingwood: A Rookie Making Waves in Pre-season
“You’re out there running match simulations with guys you’ve watched on TV; it’s been pretty cool.” These were the sentiments expressed by rookie player Harry DeMattia when asked about his experience as a Collingwood player, training alongside veterans like Scott Pendlebury, Jordan DeGoey, and the Daicos brothers.
However, the 18-year-old hasn’t allowed himself to be starstruck. Praised by coaches and teammates for his commitment and professionalism, DeMattia has hit the ground running, quite literally, during his debut pre-season with the Magpies.
He made an immediate impression, clocking an impressive 1.7 seconds over 10 meters during testing on the first day of pre-season, outperforming players like Beau McCreery and Jakob Ryan.
Off the field, he has earned recognition from the entire playing group for his active contributions in team meetings. Director of Coaching Brendon Bolton commended him, stating, “He has been an active participant, not just a recipient.”
As the former Victoria Country Under 18 Co-Captain and representative-level junior cricketer, DeMattia has brought a high level of dedication to his first year at the Club, surpassing expectations typically associated with draftees.
Head of Development Josh Fraser praised his exceptional character and work ethic, highlighting his commitment to improvement and willingness to put in extra work beyond the set schedule.
DeMattia’s diligence is evident in his approach to skill sessions, gym workouts, and recovery, often seen taking ice baths to relax his muscles and aid recovery.
With his speed and agility, DeMattia adds versatility to the squad, with potential roles across the half-back line or through the midfield.
With nearly two months of pre-season training completed, DeMattia’s next challenge will be Collingwood’s intra-club matches, match simulations, and practice games in February, signaling the beginning of his journey with the Magpies.
