Red Sox Acquire Mets Catcher to Boost Organizational Depth
Although they haven’t made any significant offseason additions, the Boston Red Sox have strengthened their roster overall.
The catcher position is one area the team has tried to strengthen. With Connor Wong and Reese McGuire, Boston appears to be set at the major league level; nevertheless, the team has taken additional steps to increase possibilities at the minor league level.
According to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe, Boston continued to add and acquired catcher Tyler Heineman in a deal with the New York Mets on Friday in return for monetary considerations.
“The Sox purchased catcher Tyler Heineman from the Mets,” Abraham stated. “To create space on the 40-man roster, right-handed reliever Max Castillo was designated for assignment. The Mets assigned 32-year-old Heineman for assignment on Tuesday. During portions of four seasons with the Miami Marlins, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Toronto Blue Jays, he is a career.218 hitter.
“A switch hitter, Heineman played for Toronto and Pittsburgh in 22 major league games last season and finished with a.670 OPS in 42 Triple-A contests. Heineman is a catcher on the 40-man roster, along with Connor Wong and Reese McGuire. Additionally, Stephen Scott, Roberto Pérez, Mark Kolozsvary, and Nathan Hickey were invited by the team to spring training.”
Heineman’s defense is excellent, even though his bat may not be the greatest in the game. Although his exact position with Boston is unknown, he is a valuable asset to have in Triple-A and to relieve injuries in the major leagues.
It doesn’t hurt to add extra depth with strong defensive potential because the Red Sox had defensive struggles as a unit in the previous season.
