The former Yankee slugger is nearing a deal with the Mets.
There’s likely to be a flurry of new signings in the coming weeks.
As Spring Training rapidly approaches, there remains a notable pool of talented free agents seeking teams. One such player, former New York Yankees utility man Gio Urshela, stands out.
In the 2023 season, Urshela, now a free agent, spent time with the Los Angeles Angels, though injuries limited him to just 62 games. Despite his truncated playing time, Urshela showcased solid performance with a .299/.329/.374 slash line when he was on the field.
Currently, Urshela finds himself in a favorable position as several teams have expressed interest in securing his services. While the Yankees have emerged as a potential destination, competition for his signature is fierce, with both the New York Mets and Miami Marlins reportedly in the mix, according to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi.
“Free agent (infielder) Gio Urshela has drawn interest from the Mets, Marlins, and Yankees, a source confirms,” Morosi revealed. “Urshela, 32, posted a .703 OPS in 62 games with the Angels last year.”
During his three-year tenure with the Yankees, Urshela showcased his talents, amassing 41 home runs, 153 RBIs, and a .292/.335/.480 slash line across 291 appearances.
Urshela’s journey has seen him traded to the Minnesota Twins before the 2022 season and subsequently dealt to the Angels ahead of the 2023 campaign.
While his eventual destination remains uncertain, it’s evident that multiple clubs are actively pursuing him in free agency.
