Another Michigan Defensive Coordinator opts for the NFL over the collegiate level.

It was widely anticipated that Jesse Minter, the now-former Defensive Coordinator at Michigan, would depart from Ann Arbor during this offseason.

Given his success in helping guide the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff National Championship this past season, Minter had emerged as a strong candidate for head coaching positions in college football. Additionally, his skills were highly coveted by multiple NFL teams.

While both avenues were available to him, the departure of head coach Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers made it almost certain that Minter would opt for the NFL route.

On Tuesday evening, Minter officially confirmed his departure from Michigan, bidding farewell through a post on social media.

Shortly thereafter, news broke that the Chargers and Minter had swiftly reached an agreement, solidifying his position as the new defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles team.

Minter faces a substantial adjustment transitioning from coordinating a college defense against teams like Ball State and Maryland to strategizing against NFL powerhouses like Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. However, Chargers fans have good reason to be optimistic about Minter’s arrival.

Michigan boasted the nation’s top-ranked total defense last season, allowing just 247 yards per game. Additionally, Minter’s Wolverines led college football in scoring defense, yielding only 10.4 points per game.

Minter and Harbaugh formed a highly effective coaching duo at Michigan, showcasing their elite capabilities. Now, the question looms whether this success will translate to the competitive AFC West division.
