Mercedes boss Toto Wolff gives reasons why Lewis Hamilton moves to Ferrari..

Lewis Hamilton reportedly made the surprising decision to switch to Ferrari after negotiations with Toto Wolff and Mercedes fell through regarding a new contract. Initially, in August, Hamilton seemed to commit to staying with Mercedes for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with both parties confirming a two-year deal.

However, last Thursday, the seven-time world champion shocked the F1 world by announcing his move to Scuderia Ferrari at the end of this year. Hamilton, aged 39, will join the Italian team on a multi-year contract, replacing Carlos Sainz Jr.

According to Channel 4 reporter Lawrence Barretto, Mercedes had only assured Hamilton a drive for 2024, with the possibility of a one-year extension. This arrangement would have allowed Wolff to potentially release Hamilton this December.

The terms of the contract offered by Mercedes played a significant role in Hamilton’s decision to depart after his 12th F1 campaign with the team. Hamilton reportedly sought a three-year deal, but Wolff was unwilling to commit to such a lengthy contract due to concerns about Hamilton’s age and the financial implications.

Ferrari CEO John Elkann took advantage of Wolff’s hesitance. Although Wolff admitted being caught off-guard by Hamilton’s decision, he emphasized that there was no animosity between them.

Wolff stated in a video message, “In the future, we will discuss whether this could have been handled differently, but I bear no ill will.

Our professional journey may be ending, but our personal relationship remains intact. Over the past 10 years, we’ve built a friendship, and I understand the difficult decision Lewis faced in choosing his next team without our usual brainstorming sessions.”

Hamilton is reportedly set to earn over £63 million annually with Ferrari but has stated that his focus for 2024 will remain on performing at his best with Mercedes.

He expressed gratitude to his Mercedes team, especially to Toto Wolff for his friendship and guidance, and aims to end his tenure with the Silver Arrows on a high note. Hamilton affirmed his commitment to delivering top performance in the upcoming season and making it a memorable one with Mercedes.
