The Houston Astros have proposed an incredibly generous offer to Jose Altuve for a contract extension.

On Tuesday, Jose Altuve agreed to a five-year contract extension that essentially ensures he will conclude his professional career with the Houston Astros. According to sources from ESPN, the contract is valued at $125 million, securing his tenure with the team until his age-39 season.

At the owners meetings in Orlando, Florida, owner Jim Crane praised Altuve as a pivotal player in the franchise’s history, expressing hopes for his induction into the Hall of Fame. The Astros officially confirmed the extension on social media, labeling Altuve as an “Astro For Life.”

The 33-year-old, who was approaching the final year of his contract worth $26 million, is now set to begin his new deal in 2025, spanning until 2029.

Altuve has emerged as a cornerstone of the Astros’ most triumphant yet controversial era, marked by two World Series triumphs, four American League championships, and seven consecutive appearances in the AL Championship Series.

Despite being undersized for a baseball player at 5-foot-6, Altuve’s journey from Venezuela, where he was signed in 2007, to stardom is remarkable.

Over his 13-year career, he has amassed impressive statistics, including a career batting average of .307, 2,047 hits, 293 stolen bases, and 209 home runs. Altuve boasts numerous accolades, such as eight All-Star selections, six Silver Slugger awards, three batting titles, a Gold Glove, and the 2017 MVP title.

Altuve’s postseason heroics have also left an indelible mark, notably his clutch home runs in critical playoff moments. In 103 playoff games, he has recorded 27 home runs and 89 runs scored, ranking among the all-time postseason leaders in several categories.

Teaming up with Astros third baseman Alex Bregman, Altuve was also facing free agency after the 2024 season. However, it was widely expected that the Astros would secure Altuve’s future with the team despite the controversies surrounding the franchise.

Under the terms of his new contract, Altuve will receive a $15 million signing bonus, followed by annual salaries of $30 million from 2025 to 2027, and $10 million in both 2029 and 2030. By the end of the deal, Altuve will become the first second baseman in baseball history to accumulate $300 million in career earnings.
