The Red Sox and Dalton Guthrie have come to an agreement with specific conditions.
The Red Sox have reached a minor league agreement with Dalton Guthrie, a player who has seen limited MLB action with the Phillies over the last two seasons.
Despite his restricted playing time, the 28-year-old has managed to make an impact, recording 28 plate appearances each season across a total of 37 games. In this brief stint, he has showcased a .344/.393/.333 batting line with a notable 16.1% walk rate alongside a 25% strikeout rate.
In addition to his commendable performance in limited MLB appearances, Guthrie boasts a respectable .289/.357/.434 slash line over parts of three seasons in Triple-A. Although not known for power hitting, with only 16 home runs in 856 plate appearances at that level, he has demonstrated solid contact skills and displayed versatility defensively.
Guthrie has accumulated significant playing time at shortstop, second base, third base, and center field, while also contributing in the outfield corners, primarily in right field and left field. Drafted in the sixth round by the Phillies in 2017, Guthrie has proven his adaptability across different positions on the field.
Over the past year, Guthrie has experienced movement across various teams in the league. Initially called up by the Phillies in September 2022, he was later designated for assignment in June to make room for Darick Hall’s return from the 60-day IL. Subsequently, he was traded to the Giants for cash, then designated for assignment again three weeks later, ultimately being claimed off waivers by the Braves.
Despite not making an appearance with the Braves, he was designated for assignment once more at the trade deadline, successfully passing through waivers. Guthrie opted for minor league free agency at the end of the season.
Guthrie’s addition will bolster the Red Sox bench competition with a right-handed bat, and his ability to play multiple positions could prove valuable as he seeks to make a return to the majors. Among the bench options currently on Boston’s 40-man roster are Enmanuel Valdez, Rob Refsnyder, Pablo Reyes, Bobby Dalbec, and David Hamilton.
