How might Warde Manuel’s experience as a former student-athlete inform his leadership as the new chair of the College Football Playoff selection committee, particularly in terms of effectively communicating with fans about the committee’s ranking process?
Much like the College Football Playoff itself, Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel is embarking on a new chapter. Bill Hancock, the executive director of the CFP, revealed on Thursday that Manuel has been designated as the CFP selection committee chair for the 2024 season. Following two seasons as a committee member, Manuel will assume the role previously held by NC State athletic director Boo Corrigan.
“We are pleased to have Warde serve as chair,” stated Hancock. “His valuable experience over the past two years as a committee member will undoubtedly serve him well in leading the group. Additionally, as a former student-athlete, he will effectively communicate with fans regarding the committee’s ranking process.”
During the 2023 season, the committee’s rankings faced significant scrutiny. The controversial decision to prioritize one-loss SEC champion Alabama over undefeated ACC champion Florida State sparked public debate, leading Corrigan to defend the decision publicly.
Manuel has also navigated public criticism, particularly regarding his handling of former Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh’s contract situation, which ultimately saw Harbaugh depart for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers instead of signing a long-term extension with Michigan.
Now tasked with guiding Michigan back to the soon-to-be-expanded CFP without Harbaugh, Manuel assumes leadership of the committee that determines playoff participants. Notably, he will oversee the selection process for the inaugural 12-team playoff field, introduced for the 2024 season.
Reflecting on his appointment, Manuel expressed gratitude for his committee experience, stating, “I have immense respect for the dedication of each committee member and their commitment to the sport.” He added, “I’m honored to serve as committee chair.”
As the landscape of college football evolves, Manuel’s role in shaping the national championship landscape will continue to evolve as well.
