Newly promoted Auburn QB coach to receive world record wages
Kent Austin, who transitioned from his role as an analyst to become Auburn’s quarterbacks coach, is set to receive a $150,000 salary increase under his new contract, as revealed in a copy of the agreement obtained by AL.com through a public records request.
Starting in the 2024 season, Austin’s salary will be $400,000. The fresh contract commenced on January 15 and will run until January 27, 2027.
Under his previous contract, which ended on January 31, Austin was paid a base salary of $250,000 without any additional endorsement rights or personal appearance fees. However, the new agreement includes $75,000 for endorsements and $75,000 for personal appearances, accounting for the $150,000 raise.
If Kent Austin continues his tenure at Auburn, he will experience a salary increase of $200,000 on February 1, 2025, followed by another raise of $350,000 on February 1, 2026. This progression could potentially elevate his total contract salary to $950,000 for the 2026 season.
The contract also outlines a fully guaranteed buyout clause covering the remainder of the money owed to him throughout the contract’s duration.
In the event that Austin decides to depart from Auburn, he would be responsible for paying a fee of $375,000 if he leaves before December 20, 2024, $250,000 if he departs before December 20, 2025, or $125,000 if he leaves before December 20, 2026.
However, if Austin accepts a new position as a head coach, play-calling coordinator, or any job in the NFL, he will not owe Auburn any compensation, as specified in the terms of the contract.
Austin is entitled to a bonus structure that mirrors the compensation structure outlined in contracts obtained by AL.com for other assistants. Prior to his role at Auburn, Austin served as co-offensive coordinator under head coach Hugh Freeze at Liberty from 2019 to 2022. Additionally, he held the position of offensive coordinator at Ole Miss from 2008 to 2009, during which time Auburn’s offensive coordinator, Derrick Nix, was also part of the coaching staff.
