Reportedly, the Canterbury Bulldogs have withdrawn their offer for Terrell May, a prop currently with the Sydney Roosters. May, whose contract expires in 2024, is among the top remaining props in a limited market after players like
Toby Rudolf and Jacob Saifiti opted to re-sign with their current clubs. Complicating matters is May’s desire to play alongside his brothers in his next contract, even if it means leaving the Roosters. May expressed this sentiment earlier this year on the Bloke in a Bar podcast, stating, “I want to be honest here, my talks are with whoever wants to sign us three brothers, that’s where I want to be.”
“Robbo, Trent Robinson, is aware of it too. I haven’t kept it from him. Whichever club is interested in signing all three brothers, that’s where I’ll go. We’re all off-contract simultaneously. Ideally, I’d sign with a club that can secure all three of us without hesitation, and I believe many players would feel the same.
The Bulldogs were rumored to be interested in signing all three May brothers, with Taylan at the Penrith Panthers and Tyrone currently playing in the English Super League. However, talks progressed too slowly, and now it’s been revealed by News Corp that the offer for Terrell, which was thought to be highly competitive, has been withdrawn.
Canterbury reportedly thinks that Terrell’s change of agent indicates a leaning towards staying with the Roosters long-term as he approaches his next contract. The Roosters are eager to retain him, particularly with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves likely to retire by the end of 2024.
Criticism has been directed at the Bulldogs for their recruitment strategy for 2024, especially regarding their lack of focus on bolstering their forward line. However, it seems the club will now allocate its resources elsewhere, internally backing players like Sam Hughes for a breakthrough season, as suggested by director of football Phil Gould, and seeking improvements in other areas of the squad, given the limited options in the remaining strong forwards on the market.”
