Calvin Pickard: The Unlikely Hero Fueling Edmonton Oilers’ Success Amidst Goaltending Challenges

Calvin Pickard may not have been the ideal choice the Edmonton Oilers initially sought as they scouted for a backup goaltender. However, he has emerged as precisely the partner needed to support the Oilers’ primary goaltender during what is shaping up to be an exceptional season. While Stuart Skinner may bask in the limelight of the team’s remarkable winning streak, Pickard has not gone unnoticed.

Recruited from the Bakersfield farm team out of necessity, given the absence of viable veteran alternatives after Jack Campbell’s disappointing performance at the start of the season, Pickard’s arrival lacked fanfare. There were no extravagant welcomes or media frenzy surrounding the 31-year-old goaltender when he arrived at Rogers Place on November 8th. At that time, the Oilers were teetering on the brink of upheaval, one loss away from potential coaching changes, leaving little room for attention on Pickard.

Yet, despite the challenging circumstances, Pickard has proven himself invaluable. He has not merely occupied space; he has consistently supported Skinner, preserving the team’s franchise-record winning streak with standout performances in critical games. His contributions include pivotal wins against formidable opponents like the New Jersey Devils, Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings (in overtime), and the Chicago Blackhawks. Furthermore, Pickard’s recent stellar performance against the Ducks, making 24 saves in a comeback victory, underscores his reliability even as Edmonton’s winning streak comes to an end.

Although Pickard’s streak persists, winning his last five starts and six of his last seven games, questions linger about his sustainability as the season progresses. Can he maintain his competitive edge when faced with tougher opponents, especially as Skinner may require more rest down the stretch? This remains a crucial consideration for the Oilers moving forward.
