Expressing his confidence after a bullpen session at spring training, Diaz stated, “I think I will be the same guy.” He emphasized his familiarity with his body and pitching approach, believing in his ability to succeed.

Diaz’s outstanding performance in 2022, including 32 saves, 118 strikeouts, and a remarkable 1.31 ERA over 62 innings, earned him a lucrative five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets. However, his momentum was halted by a torn patellar tendon in his right knee during a celebration for Puerto Rico’s World Baseball Classic victory last March.

The Mets’ emotional setback following Diaz’s injury led to a disappointing 2023 season, prompting a mid-season roster overhaul. Despite his recovery, Diaz prioritized his long-term health over potentially meaningless appearances towards the end of the season.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns has expressed confidence in Diaz’s return to the bullpen, citing it as a factor in the team’s ability to compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season. Diaz believes his presence could have made a difference in the team’s performance in 2023, expressing optimism about the upcoming season and their playoff aspirations.
