Reports indicate that Brian Jean-Mary will be returning for a second term as Michigan’s linebackers coach.

The Michigan Wolverines have been in search of a full-time linebackers coach since last fall, and according to multiple reports, they have finally found their candidate. Brian Jean-Mary, a familiar name to Michigan fans, is set to return to the team. According to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, Jean-Mary will also serve as the Wolverines’ defensive run game coordinator.

Jean-Mary previously served as the linebackers coach for Michigan in 2020 but left for the same position at Tennessee following that season. He has been with the Volunteers since then but will now rejoin Michigan under Sherrone Moore’s inaugural coaching staff.

Known for his recruiting prowess, Jean-Mary played a key role in bringing players like Junior Colson and Jaydon Hood to Michigan. During his time at the University of Texas, he also recruited five-star Malik Jefferson, as well as four-stars Jefferson McCulloch, Erick Fowler, and Anthony Wheeler. Additionally, Jean-Mary targeted several Michigan prospects while at Tennessee, including four-star linebacker Arion Carter, four-star linebacker/edge Joshua Joseph, and three-star defensive lineman Jordan Phillips.

Given his background in Florida, Jean-Mary is well-versed in the southern recruiting landscape, which should aid in his efforts to connect with top prospects in that region.

In addition to his roles at Tennessee and Texas, Jean-Mary has coaching experience at South Carolina (graduate assistant), Louisville (graduate assistant, linebackers coach, and assistant head coach), North Alabama (secondary), Georgia Tech (linebackers), and USF (assistant head coach, defensive coordinator, linebackers).

Jean-Mary’s return is a significant development for Moore and the Wolverines, who have been without a linebackers coach since the departure of Chris Partridge in November. Partridge was known for his recruiting abilities, making Jean-Mary’s appointment a valuable addition in that regard.

Despite a past comment referring to the Big House as a “tennis crowd,” Jean-Mary is likely to be embraced warmly by Michigan fans upon his return to Ann Arbor.
