In Fort Myers, Florida, there’s an air of skepticism surrounding the Red Sox as they gear up for the competitive American League East, but Trevor Story, poised to fill the leadership void left by Justin Turner, refuses to entertain doubts.
“We don’t accept defeat, and we’re fed up with it,” declared Story on Wednesday, marking the official start of Spring Training. “We believe in our team and our ability to compete. Despite the low expectations, we’re a talented bunch, and being underestimated could unite us.”
The rejuvenated shortstop, fully fit for the first time since joining the Red Sox, is determined to steer the team towards exceeding expectations in 2024.
“We acknowledge the disappointment of the past two seasons, but we’re not written off yet,” Story emphasized. “We possess a dangerous combination of talent and unity, and that’s our driving force.”
For Story, fostering a winning culture is paramount, a shift he believes began as soon as the offseason commenced.
“The change is evident across the board,” he noted. “We’ve all been aligned since the end of last season, understanding our objectives for the offseason and Spring Training. It’s a collective effort, from the top down. However, it’s the players who must embody and execute it.”
With less star power compared to previous Boston lineups, Story acknowledges the need for grit and determination.
“We’re a team that thrives on maximizing our potential,” Story asserted. “We’re competitive by nature, and there’s no reason why we can’t aim for the top. Competition within the team will drive us forward.”
