Rob Monahan‘s progression at IKON Park is evident with each passing training session. It’s not just his speed that stands out, but also his skill with the ball in hand during what marks his inaugural pre-season in a new sport. While he acknowledges that he’s still in the early stages of his football journey, there’s already plenty to be impressed by.
Recent training sessions have showcased Monahan’s abilities, such as his adept left-footed goal and a well-executed right-footed assist, which have earned him admiration from teammates. Despite the gradual learning curve, the 19-year-old is gradually finding his footing in his new environment.
Speaking to Carlton Media, Monahan emphasized his commitment to learning and improving every day, particularly as the pre-season progresses towards its business end. Although adapting to a new country and sport presents its challenges, Monahan finds familiarity in playing as a forward, reminiscent of his Gaelic football days in Kerry.
Working closely with coaches like Luke Power and his teammates, Monahan is embracing the challenge and enjoying his transition into Australian football. Off the field, he’s adjusting to his new living arrangements, having recently moved in with fellow recruit Ashton Moir after spending time with defender Lewis Young.
Despite the distance from his homeland, Monahan finds solace in the presence of his brother, who coincidentally resides in Melbourne. The support from his teammates, especially during tough times like the injury to Matt Duffy, has made the transition smoother.
Reflecting on his early experiences in Melbourne, particularly witnessing the atmosphere at the MCG during a Carlton game, Monahan is filled with a sense of excitement and determination to be a part of such moments in the future.
