What considerations went into Philipp Kurashev’s decision to sign a $4.5 million, two-year contract extension with the Blackhawks?
Not long ago, amidst the shift from the Blackhawks’ Dynasty era to a rebuilding phase, there was speculation about Philipp Kurashev’s future. Would he be traded?
Might he opt for a short-term “prove it” contract to secure his spot on the roster? As anticipated by Blackhawk Up, Kurashev instead inked a 2-year, $4.5 million extension, skillfully negotiated by GM Kyle Davidson,
which not only retained an essential player at a reasonable cost but also preserved Kurashev’s restricted free agent status. Back then, Kurashev’s NHL trajectory was uncertain, but now, he seems destined for a top-six role with the team.
Kurashev, known for his offensive prowess, has shown glimpses of brilliance throughout his career, but this season, his potential as a well-rounded player has become increasingly evident. With 29 points in 47 games (on pace for 51 points per 82 games)
he has already surpassed his previous best in points and assists (20). His consistency, effort, and evolving defensive game are noticeable attributes this season, as is his improved durability, having played in 87% of the team’s games, a notable increase from the previous two years.
His partnership with franchise center Connor Bedard has been particularly fruitful, as seen in their recent goal connection despite a loss to Pittsburgh. While the outcome wasn’t favorable, it underscored the team’s increased threat level with Bedard, Kurashev, and Foligno on the ice together.
Looking ahead, Kurashev will maintain his $2.25 million cap hit next season, entering another RFA year likely to bring him a well-deserved raise, possibly a significant one. It’s worth noting that Philipp Kurashev is only 24 years old, suggesting his best years may still lie ahead.
